Chapter 1








One a stormy night in july clara bell was born. Clara grew up in Charlston South Carolina on the bangle plantation  where  Clara played with her masters daughter Annie May boston. Clara and annie ran to the wood to play in the Ashly river . Clara Knew if she was cought running away from work she would have been lashed 20 time. Clara said to annie do u wants me to gets beat im suppose to be workin . Clara have you ever been beatin from runnin from work. My daddy said that he would never beat my friends. He said we are like sister  but not really. Clara was only 12 years old at this time and Annie was 10. Clarra ask is u gone teach me how to read that books today What was it called romeo and juliet. Annie shee gal not so loud my daddy foud out iwas teachin u to read hit lash both our backs. Clara replyed i thought he waould never lash me.He wouldnt unless u was readin. Now let go for a swim they both got out there dresses and ran to the water. They spent a good Hour splashing in that water. When from a distance call Clarra and Annie May Boston you girls better not be at that river. Annie and Clarra got out the water and grabbed up there clothes and ran back tword the field while they ran they tryed to slip their dresses on . They ran and ran when they thought they was out of trouble they ran in to Lusinda , Claras older sister. She said girl way yall been at every one back at the farm was worried about u two. Clara you suppose to be workin and you back here in these woods doin god knows what.  All three girls started walkin back twords the farm then master Boston came walking up and said Annie what u doin down in these wood with these nigger girls. Annie replyed these niggers are my friends and can call them that because i said so. Master boston raised his hand to lay one across Annies face but he cought him self and said all three of u get back to the house now  and thats where you all will be at for a while exspeily you Lusinda. Clara and lucinda were already lighter than the other slave but they were forced to work in the feilds. When all three arived to the house Lusinda took Clara to the cooking area under the house to giver her some lick across the back of her head. Master was there to greate them and he said you to in the house now. SO both of them reluctenly went in to the house. When they got into the house the master wife greated them both  wish a smile on here face saying you two have been moved to the house because you like to run away. She show the girls to there room and said clean up your self and get down stairs for your work. The girls did as she said and cleaned there self up. Clara was given the job to sweep dust serve and prepare the table. Lusinda got the jobs that required reaching since she was 6 ft 2 at the age of 14. Suprisinly lusinda didnt have ne children yet.  Clara and lucinda did their work with no complaints and when they were done they were locked in the room that was for them with a little bit of food to eat. This is where thay stayed till they were let out the next morning.
